Character Name: Shuuya Kano
Character Age: 16
Canon: Kagerou Daze
Canon Point: Heat Haze Days Arc (Chapters 18 - 23)
History: [**CONTENT WARNING : HISTORY CONTAINS ABUSE**] All there in the manual!
Personality:
On the surface, Shuuya is very easygoing. He never seems to be bothered by anything and will even laugh in dangerous situations. His Deceiving Eyes ability seems to encourage this laid-back personality even further. Such as when he uses it to make his attackers think he's captured, but he's really taking group photos of the dangerous situation he's in, completely amused in all of the pictures. He seems to put trust in everyone's abilities and goes out of his way to make things happen. Like reading Shintarou's expression to tell that he has a plan and then asking what he can do to give Shintarou the floor to save all of the hostages. He delightfully laughs and calls Shintarou interesting when Shintarou is staring the potential of death in the face and speaks fearlessly. Others have said he has a look about him that he is constantly up to something or hiding some dirty little secret. He is also proficient of daily tasks, such as cooking and cleaning and keeps after himself.
He finds people endlessly amusing and loves saying whatever will push their buttons. This is especially true in the case of Kido, which often results in him being hit. He pushes the envelope frequently and hard, sometimes to borderline harassing people and always yanking them from their mental security. When he pushes Marry too far for being the shy child she is, she breaks down and forces Shuuya to freeze with her ability. He also torments Kido for being like a ghost and being adorably girly. And, although he will offer praise, it's often in a joking manner. Shuuya is shorter for his age, sitting at 5' 5", he is the shortest in his 'family'. And this sometimes bothers him, as he used to be the tallest of his 'siblings'. But his usual retort is just to jab back and tease.
Shuuya has a strange sense of being direct with others. While he has a strong tendency to lie, joke, and tease relentlessly, he is very straightforward with what he wants, dodging his true emotions aside. Although, because he withholds just enough information, it tends to make him come off as a creeper or a weirdo, such as when he asked Shintaro, "Hey, I need your sister to come with me. Is it alright if I borrow her for a moment." after he was already basically stalking Momo, albeit to recruit her. But he didn't clarify that properly, so everyone thought he was trying to take her on a "date". However, when he was rejected from doing so, he took it in stride. His level of blunt has also been hurtful to others, such as when he blatantly told a younger Seto that, "Your eyes are out of control. You should learn to do better." He meant it to mean that he was worried for Seto, but Seto was hurt and ran away for a few days, worrying everyone.
At the end of the day, he's very loyal to those he cares about. He will lay his life down in an instant if it means helping them. Even if he comes across as crass, he's honestly just trying to prove he cares, and he gets that most people don't understand that. He has cried for loved ones, and bent over backwards to help them out. Losing Ayano was such an Earth shaker for him, that he dreads losing anyone else. As far as he's concerned, putting himself in the line of fire is the least he can do, even if it means having to work for the enemy to keep them safe. He also tends to do what he can to help in normal circumstances, such as when Momo was worried about Shintaro being taken hostage. Before even knowing who Shintaro was, he told the others to stay behind and took Seto with him to help rescue the hostages.
Despite his rather goofy persona, he also does tend to think things through. He is intelligent and is actually the second in command of the Mekakushi Dan. When he goes into action, he already has a plan, and chooses the best path for each person to take to put it into effect. Many times, he has known exactly how to get someone where he needs them to be at the right time. His only fault in his plans is the manner he speaks to others. He has more than once flubbed up a recruitment trip that would have otherwise went off nearly without a hitch if someone else were able to do it at the time. He actually accepts that weakness within himself and, rather than be upset when he fails, he's already calculating another path to get the desired result. He certainly doesn't mind playing to someone else's plan either, and will ask what they need to make it work. Using his skills and resources, he will ensure that he retrieves what is needed to accomplish the mission. This shows that Shuuya is incredibly adaptable and willing to change his mind upon new evidence being presented. Being "right" has never been Shuuya's thing. Instead, try, try again is certainly a standard he lives by.
He is capable of holding on to rage and revenge. For example, he strongly dislikes Shintaro for treating Ayano so coldly while the latter was still in their world, and, though he cooperates with Wide-Eyes Snake, he is always determining ways to repay the favour and make sure he suffers for it. Although, he doesn't have the inclination toward grudges. It takes threatening his core value of 'Family' in order to particularly piss him off enough to not like someone.
**CONTENT WARNING : THE FOLLOWING SECTIONS OF PERSONALITY COVER ABUSE**
The humoured demeanour is actually all a facade, though. Underneath, he shows all of the signs of abuse and finds himself worthless. He puts on a strong face as the second in command for the Mekakushi Dan and hides all of his pain so well, that he never gets the support he needs until he's falling apart. Deep inside, he feels like he's completely useless, due to his mother's abuse. He absolutely despises himself, the person he is, and will call himself a monster if people start getting under his skin. He takes being hit by Kido fairly well, and it is actually said that he would rather accept the abuse than be hated. Additionally, when Kido has beaten him up in the past, he thanked her and asked her to continue if it means she won't come to hate him. In virtually any given event, Shuuya will not defend himself against abuse, mental or physical. It's also a good portion of why he pushes the envelope frequently, to keep that attention, even if he gets abused even further. He has a deep-seated fear of being alone.
Shuuya can be easily manipulated, due to his abusive history, and was even made to work for Wide-Eyes Snake, via circumstances surrounding Ayano's disappearance. Such as being forced to play the part of Ayano's corpse, and being used to an extent to gather the people that surround the 'Queen'. Although, Wide-Eyes Snake had also ensured the death of his remaining family members if he didn't cooperate. He can even be seen using his Deceiving Eyes to purposely torment people. This can be seen in when he takes the form of a person's loved one to put them back in their place (Haruka for Ene in the anime; Ayano for Seto in the manga - both to scold them for trying to forget someone they care about).
In the rare circumstance that he is seen falling apart, reaching his breaking point, he will admit out loud that he loathes himself for everything, that he blames himself for Ayano, for his mother, for the things happening to everyone. He cries and he yells, attempting to push everyone away. He doesn't feel good enough for anyone to stay near him, and he will insist that they don't before promptly trying to bottle up all of the pain again, reverting back to the humourous facade and trying to pretend that nothing happened.
Inventory: The clothes on his back.
Abilities:
Decieving Eyes: This ability allows him to alter his appearance. From something as simple as making him look like he's imprisoned when he really isn't, to full out appearing as someone else. To appear as another person, he has to know their voice, smell, and appearance. This effect is triggered when his eyes turn red, and immediately broken when he feels pain, or otherwise ceased by willing means.
Obfuscating Stupidity: Despite his foolish behaviours, he's actually very intelligent and is always adjusting his course of action as needed, staying three steps ahead of most, and can be seen as a sort of chessmaster.
Athletic Inclination: While he's definitely not the most skilled at physical performances, he does know enough on how to dodge, get himself out of danger, and can throw a few decent punches. He is still small-framed though, and this can work against him.
Flaws: **CONTAINS ABUSE TRAITS** Shuuya may appear to be happy-go-lucky, but honestly, he deems himself worthless. He hides his true feelings under a mask at virtually all times. He picks on people and will do so just to get a reaction, to the point of going too far. He can be bought into betraying other people if the right vantage point is used against him and he will take abuse in verbal and physical forms, because he would rather be abused than hated. He uses his ability to fool people and has even done so to hurt others (albeit, with semi-good intentions).
